Climate-Controlled Storage Space Makes It Easy To Store Delicate Items

Posted on

Climate-controlled storage space is the perfect option for both short-term and long-term storage of more sensitive items. Delicate linens, books, paper products, artwork, and more all benefit from temperature and humidity adjustments in a storage unit, and electronics require climate control to escape time spent in storage unscathed. These units are available in a variety of configurations, making it important to understand the features needed for personal goods and the type of storage unit preferred.

Temperature control versus climate control

Sometimes the terms "temperature control" and "climate control" are used interchangeably, but they are two very distinctive services in the storage industry. Temperature control is limited to providing air conditioning in warm weather and heating in cold weather events. Storage units are designed to kick in these features when the temperature meets a certain level, and for indoor units, the temperature setting may be universal to the entire building versus an individual space.

Climate control includes temperature control but also features the added benefit of humidity adjustments. Temperature control is enough for a lot of items, such as consumer electronics and clothing, but it is not ideal for long-term storage of books and other delicate forms of media. Climate control helps provide an extra layer of protection against mold, mildew, and deterioration.

Based on the contents of a collection, always research if climate control is provided at the unit level or across the facility as the ideal humidity level for different collections can vary. Research how power costs are applied on a unit basis. Temperature and climate-regulated units are often offered at a premium compared to standard units, so knowing all costs is important.

Types of climate-controlled units

Many climate-controlled storage spaces are housed within larger storage buildings instead of exterior-access storage units. The housing of multiple units indoors helps keep costs lower as each unit benefits from the insulation of the building and the temperature control of shared spaces.

However, climate-control storage is not limited to larger facilities. Businesses and homeowners can also lease climate control storage trailers for long-term use at a building site, easy storage of excess inventory, and overflow storage for a home. These units are generally Conex-type rentals or trailers with air conditioning and humidity control built-in. They are transported to a home site and offloaded onto a preformed surface that is flat and easy to access. Monthly and annual leases make these an ideal option for extended use and easy access to materials and collections. The costs associated with climate and temperature control are paid by the renter through standard utility bills as the trailer features basic utility hookups, including an electrical box.
